A Dictionary of Confusable Legal Terms: an A-Z of differences, distinctions and subtleties of legal meaning

Estate or interest? Right or privilege? Offer or proffer? Distinguish or overrule? Latent or patent?

The difference is significant. It is essential that students understand it and legal professionals know the right word to use in the right way.

This book is for both reading and reference. It can be read to gain an expanded knowledge of legal words, their meaning and use, and it can be referred to when you are writing, to help choose the correct term to insert into your contract, email or essay.

Each of the 120 single-page entries starts with a question: which term should I choose from the alternatives given?

Each term is defined as you would find in a typical law dictionary to assist with that choice. But this is not a typical dictionary. 248 terms are defined alongside another with which it might be confused or from which it is different. Every entry defines and distinguishes by explaining the alternative terms and how each is correctly used in contrast with the other.

The terms are also placed within the category of law in which they are used. Most are in wide legal use, but if they have a clear category it is shown. Ability or capacity? is explained as used in contract law; dismiss or discontinue? in criminal law; and dismissal or redundancy? in employment law.

The dictionary has been compiled from the author's forty years of legal practice which ensures its practical value and relevance. It is accurate, easy to read and jargon-free.
